Learn about the five different battles that took place from October 23 to October 26, 1944 in the Leyte Gulf.
After its defeat at the June 1944 Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Imperial Japanese Navy made one last effort to deal with the ever more powerful US Navy in the Pacific. As General Douglas MacArthur waded ashore on Leyte Island in the Philippines on October 20, 1944, declaring “I have returned!”, Japanese naval units began a complex, multi-pronged attack that led to the biggest naval battle in history, and generated a multitude of mysteries and controversies over how the battle was fought that still resonate today. This presentation will cover the five different battles that took place; oddly, none of them actually in Leyte Gulf itself!
