From Rail to Residence: Catalog Homes in Geneva (Adults)
REGISTRATION RECOMMENDED
Thursday, February 05
10:30am - 11:30am
Geneva Public Library District
Meeting RoomDiscover the charm of mail-order homes shipped by rail and the stories behind these beloved American houses, located right here in Geneva!
Ordered by mail and sent by rail, catalog houses filled a need for sturdy, inexpensive and especially, modern homes—complete with conveniences of indoor plumbing and electricity. All shipping was done by rail with boxcars full of labeled parts, consequently the largest concentrations of catalog houses are in the Northeast and Midwest, which were served by more rail lines.
Join us at the Library to hear stories about these quaint homes designed by Sears Roebuck, Aladdin, Montgomery Ward, Gordon-Van Tine and Harris Brothers, and learn how to discover if a house came from a catalog.
This program is in partnership with the Far West Community Arts Associates.
The doors will open for seating approximately 10-15 minutes before the program begins.
