Check Out Materials

Borrow books, board games, gadgets and more at Geneva Public Library. Read our policies below to learn how to check out and place holds on all materials in our expansive collection.

Loan Periods

Most materials in the library check out for 3 weeks, with the potential for 2 renewals. Exceptions include:

• Aging Well Collection: Items in our Aging Well Collection may be placed on hold by GPLD cardholders only. To browse our collection online, please visit our Aging Well page.

• Library of Things: Library of Things items may only be placed on hold by GPLD cardholders, and can only be picked up/returned at GPLD. While all patrons are welcome to check-out Library of Things items on our open shelves, only GPLD cardholders may check-out items from our locked storage. To browse our collection online, please visit our Library of Things page.

• Lobby Collection: Materials in the Lobby Collection may not be placed on hold and cannot be renewed.

• New Book Club Collection: These books may be checked out for 3 weeks, though they may not be placed on hold, and cannot be renewed.

• New Items: Items in our New collections (except for New Adult Nonfiction and New Kids Books) may only be placed on hold by GPLD cardholders.

• Video Games: Only 5 games may be checked out per card.

Inter-Library Loan

Need something not available in the catalog? GPLD cardholders may inter-library loan (ILL) 10 items at a time per card. These ILL requests may be fulfilled by libraries all across the United States, and may take longer to fill than standard hold requests. To submit an ILL request, please fill out the appropriate form on our Inter-library Loan Request page. These requests may take up to two weeks to be processed.

Please note that ILL items do not renew automatically. To renew an ILL item, please contact the library at gvill@gpld.org.

Holds Locations

Drive Up Window

To pick up your materials at our convenient Drive Up Window, select “Geneva Public Library District Drive Up Window” when placing your holds.

Drive Up Hours:

Monday to Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

You can return most materials through our drop slot at the Drive Up 24/7. Puzzles, board games, and STEAM kits may be returned at our Drive Up window during our operating hours.

Your holds will be available for pickup for 7 days. Need more time to pick up your holds? Give us a call at (630) 232-0780 and we can extend your holds pick-up time.

Holds Shelf Inside the Library

To pick up your materials inside the library, select “Geneva Public Library District” when placing your holds.

Your holds will be located on shelves near the Lobby Desk on the first floor.

Check your items out at a self-check kiosk or at the Lobby Desk.
