Learn the history of the Japanese Garden in the Fabyan Forest Preserve, presented by Vivian Lasken of Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley.

The Fabyan Japanese Garden is a one-acre outdoor garden within the 250-acre Fabyan Forest Preserve designed by regarded landscape architect, Taro Otsuka, around 1910. Colonel George and Nelle Fabyan commissioned Otsuka to create their Japanese Garden because of their interest in Japanese culture and their love of nature. Many features typical of Japanese gardens are present such as a tea house, lanterns (made of concrete), a pond, a moon bridge, and a wide variety of trees and plants. Join us for a visual treat in this lecture by Vivian Lasken, Director of the Fabyan Villa and Japanese Garden.

Vivien Lasken is the Director of the Fabyan Villa and Japanese Garden and the leading expert on Colonel Fabyan and the Riverbank estate. She has a degree in Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology and Museum Studies from UIUC. Vivien has worked at the Spurlock Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry prior to Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley.
