Alicia is the story of Alicia Appleman-Jurman, a young girl who managed to survive in a hostile world, in this dramatic portrayal by Betsey Means.

There have been many accounts of survival during the Holocaust, but few of a woman's active heroism. Alicia is the story of a young girl who survived in a hostile world. While fleeing the Nazis through war-ravaged Poland, she began saving the lives of people she did not know. Her family cruelly wrenched from her, Alicia rescued other Jews from the Gestapo, led them to safe hideouts, and lent them her courage and hope. Even the sight of her mother's brutal murder could not shatter this remarkable child's faith in human goodness or her determination to prevail against overwhelming odds. Alicia swore on her brother's grave that if she survived, she would speak for her silenced family. This is a thrilling, uplifting story of true-life heroism, a story the young must hear and their elders must remember.

WomanLore offers one-woman performances adapted directly from journals, autobiographies, and personal writings. Audiences enjoy a complete theatrical experience, authentically costumed and accurately evoking a bygone era. Actor Betsey Means educates and entertains as she presents historical figures' experiences and impassioned opinions in the style of their time and place.

This program commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day, corresponding to the Hebrew calendar's 27th day of Nisan. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
