Philosophy

Light, whether natural or artificial, is transparent, flexible and versatile. It is difficult to exploit and control. Good lighting brings quantifiable benefits to building owners and users, to towns and cities, in terms of visual amenity, enhanced well being, energy and cost savings and the avoidance of light pollution.
Good lighting seemlessly complements landscape and townscape, features, exterior and interior architecture, artefacts, and, for the most part, does not draw attention to itself. This can only be achieved through a complete understanding of both the aesthetic and technical aspects of lighting design. Effective and innovative use of light requires an investment in singular lighting skills.

GP:LD’s approach to the use of light is ‘less is more’. We offer lighting solutions from a design base that treats lighting first and foremost as a qualitative, creative, visual element. Thus we develop a productive relationship with the full design team. We understand that all solutions must be acceptable to the client and the user, and underwritten by practicalities. We have the expertise to appraise the braod spectrum of appropriate technology in terms of performance design, energy and maintenance costs, ease of control and maintenance.

Graham Phoenix’s reputation as an internationally known lighting design consultant has been earned over the years. He is, and has been, proud to work on modest as well as on award winning buildings by many of the great names in architecture and design, as well as with leading conservationists on historic monuments and sites. His holistic approach to lighting design applies as much to individual buildings as to strategic urban lighting studies.
